The Canter Show Ring Instructions

(Click here to see Promotional Flier)

This simple string round pen was designed for rapid setup on solid or difficult surfaces with no ground penetration, and/or for quickly establishing a string round pen in front of crowds.

It is created with ElectroBraid electric rope.  Though it is not normally electrified while in use, to ensure satisfactory use your horse should be trained ahead of time to respect the rope.  If not already trained to electric rope, this round pen can be temporarily electrified for training.  See our "How to Introduce your Horse to the Grazier System" video on our "Details Site."

Included in the Show Ring kit:

12 line post surface mounts

12 line posts (one clip only when purchased solely as a show ring, though shown here with three clips on line posts borrowed from other working Grazier equipment; also, shown here are heavy duty line posts, but works as well with standard posts.)

1 Hand Reel w/

1 Radius Measuring Rope

1 Self-Positioning Ring Rope

Insert each line post stake into the hole in the surface mount block.

Position the foot pedal so that it aligns across corner-to-corner on the block.
Remove the "Diameter Rope" from the hand reel.

It is wound on last, so will be the first to come off.

Position one post assembly where you wish to locate the CENTER of the ring.

If the pedals were applied to a standard working line post, there may be a bit of the stake protruding from the bottom of the block; be certain to push it on into the soil.  If working on a solid surface, you can adjust the pedal on the fiberglass post such that the steel spikes do not protrude at all.

Slip one end of the Diameter Rope onto the post at the center of the ring.

If you don't have a helper to stand and keep this center post stable, you can use any weighty item nearby as ballast on its base, as shown.

Roughly position the line post assemblies around the circle.

The posts need not be accurately placed at this time; just so they are within reach as you proceed to position them accurately and place the Ring Rope onto the posts.  If you have a helper to bring each one to you, you can avoid this pre-placement of the posts.

Using the Diameter Rope, position the first post.  Let the Measuring Rope sag low under its own weight; you do not need it tight.

Hook one end loop of the Self-Positioning Ring Rope onto the top of the first post, and proceed to pull the rope off the hand reel.
Continue to pull the entire rope off the reel, and let it lay on the ground roughly in the shape of the intended circle.
The end of the rope is looped and knotted, and this knot is pushed through a hole in the reel,  to hold the rope when you begin to rewind it.

Pull the rope out of this hole.  Put the reel aside, as you are done with it until you take up the rope again.

Pick up the rope at the first positioning loop.  Set this loop over the top of the line post, and let it rest on the hanger.  Do not place it into the hooks of the hanger; letting it simply rest on top makes it much easier to take the ring down later.

Using the Diameter Rope to measure distance from center, and the Ring Rope to measure distance from post-to-post, position the second post so that the rope hangs in a comfortable garland, not too tight.

Continue this process around the entire circle.

As you get to the 7th post, you can begin to check your progress by noting that the posts should be lining up approximately straight across from each other on the circle, as sighted across the center post.

When you get to the 12th post, you will realize it is "missing":  it is the one you used to mark the center.

Simply bypass this post temporarily, and hook the end look of the Ring Rope onto the top of the first post.

Now go retrieve your center post, and unhook the Diameter Rope.

The Diameter Rope has done it's job; you will not need it again.  Set it aside with the hand reel.

What was the center post is now put into place at the 12th positioning loop.
At the first line post, where the two loops meet, is where you will find your gate opening.  Simply lift the loop off to open the gate.
The finished ring.

Adjust any posts to reduce garland, as desired.

Enjoy.
