Any
electric fence charger may be used with any Grazier System
fence. Solar, 110-volt, 12-volt or D-cell type chargers of any size
are acceptable. In fact, Grazier kits typically come with a jumper
wire intended to permit connection to any nearby electric fence or charger
you might already own.
For inclusion with our Grazier System kits, we chose the 2 D-cell charger made by Pel
Industries from New Zealand. This small charger fits in the palm
of your hands, runs continuously for eight
weeks or more on just two common flashlight batteries, and
clips to hang right on the Grazier System rope fence!
We have measured the voltage of this charger on fresh batteries between
6,500 to 10,000 volts. Admittedly, it doesn't have the
"push" to buckle a cow's knees like a good 110-volt system, and
it won't run 10 miles of fence. (Its output is 0.033 joules, stored
power is 0.05 joules. In comparison, a 110-volt charger might range
from 3 to 10 joules, to drive miles and miles of fence line.) But a horse
is MUCH more sensitive than cattle and needs only 2,500 volts to
hold, and this small charger does it well! We have used this charger to drive
up to 1 mile of fence (i.e., 1/4 mile of 4-strand). |
